Contemplation and Contexts

David Germano, Professor of Religious Studies, University of Virginia, in partnership with Shauna Shapiro, Associate Professor of Counseling Psychology at Santa Clara University, has a Mind and Life fellowship to pursue a wide ranging study on the centrality of contexts in contemplation. The project, running from 2013-14, is examining how philosophical, social, aesthetic, environmental and other contexts are centrally constitutive of the nature, dynamics, and impact of any given contemplative practice, rather than being incidental. Much of scientific research is insufficiently attentive to such realities, such that this study hopes to provide an important corrective and guide. Results are expressed in publications that speak to psychological and humanistic audiences respectively.
